Mitigating Risk

IMRG Risk Management Forum

Identity fraud is now the largest type of fraud carried out against individuals – what does this mean for retailers, how can you protect customer data and mitigate the risk of falling prey to it?

This forum will address the strategies that retailers can put in place to ensure they are well placed to tackle fraudulent activity when they arise. Of particular interest will be a discussion around the imminent introduction of the EU’s General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR).These new rules come into force in May 2018 and may open up new opportunities to fraudsters; as well as increase fines for businesses that ‘lose’ customer data. Combined with new rules around data portability, there is the potential for an increase in risk level as fraudster could get hold of much more detailed customer data; making it harder to track them.

Key areas of discussion will include:

  1. Current trends in fraud threats e.g. CNP, ID theft, account take over and ‘friendly fraud’
  2. Discussion on ‘account take-over’; increase incidence and mechanisms for reducing risk
  3. Key areas of interest for risk managers on GDPR

*An online retailer would be a B2C operation selling products or services, via a website with transactions completed fully, including payment, via any interactive channel, from any location. These operations may have a social media presence, store, or be linked via a marketplace but would operate primarily via their own domain and not via a marketplace alone. Unfortunately 3rd party agencies who have retailers as clients are not classed as retailers themselves but would be a solution provider. Attendees registering under incorrect ticket types will be may have their ticket cancelled with access to the event refused.
