Reporting August 2017 Performance

  • UK online retail sales grew 16.4% in August
  • Month-on-month performance was -4.0%
  • Excluding Travel, the Index recorded annual growth of 14.7% and a monthly decrease of 3.9% from July
  • The average basket value (excl. Travel) was £91 in August 2017, an increase of £7 from last month
  • The average conversion rate in August was 4.3%, which is back in line within the expected range after last month’s high result
  • The clothing sector had its best performance of the year, with 17.9% year-on-year growth
  • Home & Garden continued its strong year with 19.7% growth year-on-year
  • Electricals reported a fifth consecutive month of negative growth, with -0.2% in August
  • The Health and Beauty sector reported -5.0% year on year decrease August — continuing the sector’s volatile performance in 2017
  • Travel performed well in August with 17.6% year on year — significantly higher than 2016, which was just 3%
  • Sales made via mobile devices (tablets & smartphones) grew 21.6% year-on-year in August, and declined 5.7% from the previous month
