Reporting August 2016 Performance

  • UK e-retail sales grew 16.3% year-on-year in August but fell 8.2% from the previous month
  • The strong performance in the clothing / apparel sector continued in August, with accessories and lingerie both recording annual growth in excess of 40%
  • Following the strong performance by high st / multichannel retailers in July, the online-only merchants outperformed this group with annual growth 9 percentage points higher than the multichannel group
  • Britons spent an estimated £9.9 billion shopping online during August, resulting in total estimated spend YTD 2016 reaching £80.0 billion – this is up from £69.6 billion in the period January to August 2015
  • M-retail sales (including tablets) grew 38.0% year-on-year in August and fell 4.1% from the previous month
