Reporting April 2017 Performance

  • UK online retail sales grew 13.5% in April
  • Month-on-month performance was +4.3%
  • Excluding travel, the Index recorded annual growth of 14.2% and a monthly increase of 4.6% from March
  • Average basket value (excl. Travel) reached £98 in April 2017, a large increase from April 2016 at £79
  • The average conversion rate (excl. Travel) in April was 4.5%, lowest of the year so far, but within the expected range
  • The apparel sector grew 10.5% year on year in April 2017 — Menswear had a disappointing month with negative growth of -7.1%
  • Home and Garden had a strong month with 32.6% growth — the best since November 2013
  • Beers Wines and Spirits bounced back from a poor March to record a 28.9% growth in April
  • The Health and Beauty sector reported 4.3% growth in April, continuing the sectors trend for yo-yoing performance over the last 12 months
  • Mobile retail sales (tablets & smartphones) grew 29.0% year-on-year in April, and grew 6.8% from the previous month
