Online Retail Sector Growth – Year To Date (Jan-May 2017)

This article provides a snapshot view on the year-to-date (YTD – Jan-May 2017) growth rates for the sectors that we track in the IMRG Capgemini Sales Index, also offering comparisons with the same period in 2016.

Over the last year, the garden sector has continued to enjoy a recovery that began around this time last year. In May 2016 it saw a spike following several months of negative growth, with a 55% year-on-year increase in sales. With the exception of January 2017, the sector has recorded positive growth every month since, with YTD growth in 2017 at 13.6%.

Beers, wines, and spirits is another 2017 success story so far, growing 18.6% YTD, by contrast with the same period in 2016, in which it shrank 1%. January 2017 played a large part in boosting the sector’s growth, with 61% YOY growth suggesting that it didn’t so much feel the squeeze of post-Christmas belt-tightening, and that participation in Dry January may not have been so prevalent this year for some.

Menswear’s year-to-date growth in 2017 is tracking at -1.6%. Over the same period last year, it grew 22.2%, meaning that the sector’s performance in 2017 so far has been -28.3% on the same period 2016.

The following table compares the YTD performance in 2017 with that of 2016.
