Worldwide broadband subscribers reaches 600m
The number of global broadband subscribers has grown over 20% in less than 18 months, with the number soaring to over 600m in the first quarter of this year, according to a report by Point Topic.
In Q1 2012 there were an estimated additional 16.12m broadband lines, up from just over 14m in the same period last year, representing annual growth of 11.5%.
Asia continues to be the region with the largest overall number of broadband users, with 262m in total, adding 8.5m new connections during the quarter. In terms of country rankings there are few changes in the top 20, although Brazil, India and Russia all continued to see above average growth in broadband numbers, with Turkey and the Ukraine also showing strong growth, according to Point Topic. China recorded the highest annual growth in broadband subscribers in the first quarter, up 26.4%, resulting in a 19% annual growth rate. Russia saw annual growth in numbers grow 27.43%, the Ukraine 26.82% with Brazil, China and India also recording double-digit growth.
