ICANN unveils 1,930 generic top-level domain name applications

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has revealed information on applications for new generic top-level domain names (gTLDs), which include brands such as .Apple, .Google, .Oracle and .Nokia.  Several applications have also been received from cities including .Berlin, .London and .Madrid.

The majority of applications came from North America, with 911 submissions, compared with 675 in Europe and 303 in the Asia-Pacific regions. There were 40 applications from UK companies including Boots, HSBC, Lipsy, Next, Orange and William Hill. Microsoft has applied for 11 domains in all, including .Azure, .Bing, .Docs, .Hotmail, .live, .Microsoft, .Office, .Skydrive, .Skype, .Windows and .Xbox. Amazon submitted applications for 76 gTLDs including .read, .store, .music, .fire, .cloud, .news and .pay and Google applied for 102 new domains.

There are several bids for the same domain names, with 231 identical requests made across 751 applications. These will require independent consultation based on several criteria before a winner for each domain name is chosen.
