Online adspend reaches record high
UK companies spent a record £4.8bn advertising online in 2011, up 14.4% from the previous year, according to a study by the Internet Advertising Bureau, conducted by PwC.
The growth was boosted by video ads and marketing on social media platforms, resulting in the biggest increase in online advertising spend in five years. Spending on online video advertising doubled to £109m last year, up from £54m in 2010. Advertising spend on mobile devices surged 157% to £203m in 2011, due to the strong growth in the number of smartphone and tablet users.
The finance sector saw the biggest spending on display advertising, followed by fast-moving consumer goods and then retail, followed by the entertainment, media and technology sectors.
